Coping in Difficult Times

Now, here's the thing. Would you buy a lottery ticket if you knew there was no chance of winning? Would you order a home delivery pizza if you knew it ain't going to arrive? Would you vote on Jan 5th in Georgia if you knew the election was rigged? Thought not. Maybe we can all take comfort in the Law of Unintended Consequences and hope the Trump supporters either stay home or spoil their ballots. It really would be sweet justice if all the lies and delusional shite that continues to emanate from the current President succeeded in robbing the GOP of Senate control.

I don't know about others, but US politics is proving therapeutic for me and serving as a very valuable distraction from domestic political woes at the moment and in this regard I'm still very much enjoying CNN and their wonderfully refreshing approach to news coverage. I'm learning stuff daily, especially putting things into context, along with reporting truthfully and ruthlessly calling out lies, deceit and bullshit. It's really quite a shock at first, but then becomes so very reassuring.

It was great to watch the first in-depth interview with Joe Biden and the Vice President Elect and I suspect many will share the obvious delight of the interviewer that they are just ordinary good people and politics will return to normal very soon. I was also fascinated by the author of a new biography on Jimmy Carter, the unassuming peanut farmer and generally 'good guy', who nevertheless felt it necessary to indulge in 'dog whistles' in order to gain support from 'conservatives' during his election campaign. Apparently they cried 'foul' when in office he immediately embraced supportive black policies. Maybe in politics 'ends' always justify 'means'?

Domestically, Piers Morgan on Good Morning Britain is still doing a great job, but he really ought to note that CNN anchors never interrupt and are unerringly polite and even appropriately deferential. Having said that, it was great to see him publicly humiliate and harangue yet another minister this morning. James Cleverly got his just desserts for trying to rewrite history and tell us that the 'oven-ready' Brexit deal wasn't about trade at all. If it was CNN I'm sure they'd say something along the lines of 'the Tories are taking the piss'. Or words to that effect.

I might as well carry on with the TV theme seeing as it's helping me enormously in trying to stay on an even keel during these troubled times. I find BBC Repair Shop absolutely perfect viewing, especially if accompanied with a nice cup of tea and I don't even drink much of the stuff. I defy anyone to find fault with this brilliant caring and skill-based format and I can't wait to get down to Sussex and explore the Weald and Downland Living Museum. I guess it's like Beamish, but without the coal and steam.

Mention must be made of the entire Talking Pictures channel for dishing up daily gems from yesteryear, handily delivered to my magic Virgin Tivo box on a very regular basis. Endless episodes of Callan might look and feel incredibly naff nowadays, but that's precisely it's analogue charm and interest in a slick digital hi-res age. The same can be said of Public Eye and its deeply troubled private investigator star who, like Callan, is wonderfully enigmatic and rootless.

I'll save the best to the end. By far my absolute go-to programme during this horrid Covid year and guaranteed to put a smile on my face and a warm sense of everything will be right again soon is Bangers and Cash on the Yesterday channel. Filmed in the magical North Yorkshire town of Thornton-le-Dale, who'd have thought it's the veritable centre of the British classic car universe? I take my hat off to the producers for spotting this TV gold lurking in such a beautiful but sleepy part of the world. Of course it's not just the brilliant cars going through the regular auctions that make this programme, it's the wonderful characters, especially Sarah, and I've a sneaking feeling the narrator has a soft spot for her as well...

  2. I totally disagree with you Jim about the James Cleverly interview. I watched it all and it was Piers Morgan trying to rewrite history. If you go back to the 2019 election campaign, all the references to an oven ready deal were specifically in relation to the withdrawal agreement. I've just checked the transcripts of the pre-election TV debates and there is no reference to a trade deal being oven ready. There is reference to the oven ready withdrawal agreement providing a transitional 12 month period to enable a trade deal to be negotiated but that's not the same thing.

    1. Everything Brexity has been conflated, confused & contaminated by persistent lies, deceptions & duplicity. *Technically* the 'oven-ready' bollocks was about the withdrawal agreement, but... the withdrawal agreement was & is inextricably linked to the terms of trade in most peoples' minds. The Guardian said this in Sept this year:

"More perhaps than any modern election, Johnson’s campaign in December was reduced to a single issue and three words: Get Brexit Done. This was to be achieved by electing a parliament that was absolutely committed to passing the “oven-ready” and “excellent” withdrawal agreement.

There was always one level of spuriousness in this – the withdrawal agreement was not the end of anything. But it is now clear that there was a much deeper and even more cynical level of fakery. It was not just that Brexit would not be “done” when the withdrawal agreement was duly passed, it was that Cummings and Johnson intended all along to undo it. What was presented to voters as a point of no return was, to them, a temporary arrangement that they would unpick later. “Oven-ready” had a secret addendum, “but we’ll go back and edit the cookbook to change the ingredients”."

One of those ingredients was, of course, trade deals. In Dec 2019 (when the phrase was first used at Addenbrookes Hospital) Farage came out of his cupboard to moan:

"Johnson's 'oven ready' deal will give us 'indigestion' for years... [I'm] "disappointed" Boris Johnson has moved away from a Canada-style trade deal with the EU"

      As reported at the time:

The Prime Minister was speaking about Brexit and the upcoming December general election while visiting Addenbrooke hospital in Cambridge. Mr Johnson told BBC News: “The only thing we can really do now is go to our people, go to the country and say come on let's get this thing done. We’ve got an oven-ready deal."

Mr Johnson continued: "Put it in the microwave as soon as we get back after the election on the 12th of December. "Get it done and then let's get on with our domestic agenda."

From where I sit Brexit has been, and continues to be, a pile of extremely expensive, pointless bullshit.

Its been the most embarassing & fruitless cock-waving competition that the Eton Boys have ever indulged in (in every sense).

However, Cleverly cannot wriggle out of being a slimy apologist for his racist mate Eustice by trying to claim Racist George was "misunderstood".

    3. John Crace is the Guardian's political sketchwriter so his analysis is hardly likely to be accurate.

At the end of the day the main thing is we're out of the EU, deal or no deal. We've tried to negotiate with the Europeans in good faith but they can't bear the fact we've chosen to leave and that's clouding their judgement. Just like the French still can't get over the fact we saved their bacon twice.

What a pile of xenophobic, deluded nonsense.

The UK chose to leave the EU based upon the empty rhetoric of lying psychopaths who seem to think they can say & do anything with impunity, that consequences are for everyone else & that its only others who are wrong, difficult or resistant to change.

Its a familiar game play for probation staff. A political ideology is imposed based upon lies, a pack of sycophants & blinkered bullies ignore the facts, the whole thing is pushed through parliament using misdirection & manipulation, anyone who opposes it is labelled 'difficult', 'dinosaur' and 'obstructive'. In next to no time the inevitable shitstorm breaks, but where are the architects of this clusterfuck? Mostly rolling in gilt-edged clover, some wrapped in ermine, never to be seen again; leaving everyone else mired in their shit.

And those who warned them, who tried to stop the disaster? Most have been jettisoned overboard, had their pay frozen, had their redundancy stolen, had their terms & conditions reduced, have been hung out to dry for others' incompetence, others' failings, others' dereliction of duty.

Burley, who apologised over the incident and claimed she had only broken the rules because she needed to “spend a penny”, went to the Century Club in Soho, London, on Saturday night in a group of 10 that included Sky colleagues Beth Rigby, Inzamam Rashid and Sam Washington.

The group sat at two tables, of six and four, before going on to a nearby restaurant, Folie. A smaller group of four then returned to Burley’s home to continue the celebrations.

All of the Sky staff are facing a review of their conduct by their employer, which said it was “disappointed” by the incident."

Newly-released Government data shows that Deloitte, a British multinational consultancy firm, was paid a total of £804,608 in September and October for “outsourcing implementation”.

After contacting the Cabinet Office, Byline Times understands that Deloitte has been employed to help Government departments to implement its “Outsourcing Playbook”. 6. If only the failure to wear a mask rendered that intellectually challenged individual susceptible to the virus. But sadly its others that are more likely to suffer - your parents, grandparents, & vulnerable others one might spend time with.

Once more with feeling: The vaccine does not make the virus go away. The vaccine does not 'kill' the virus. The vaccine is not like Trump's magic intravenous disinfectant. The vaccine provides each recipient with a level of protection preventing them getting sick. It is highly likely (not proven either way) that the virus can still be passed on by those who have been vaccinated. The vaccination programme will take at least a year for the UK population. So the "egg heads" - however much I might dislike their previous obsequious silence & alignment with earlier govt bollox - are quite correct in what they say.

You, @22:13, are a selfish idiot spreading dangerous ideas - and probably shedding virus without your 'muzzle' on. Merry Xmas.

According to the once £1.5b crutch of the Tory party, the DUP, this agreement amounts to an act of treachery. Its likely to be seen the same way by those in the Tory party who bang the drum that Brexit is all about sovereignty.
The issue is being discussed in Parliament later this afternoon, and I'm sure it will be a pretty heated debate with many unpleasant accusations being leveled. Maybe that's the real reason Johnson has decided to eat out to help out in Brussels tonight?

"A government plan to deliver discounted starter homes has left 85,000 young people waiting in vain for an affordable place to live, in a policy branded “deplorable” by a cross-party committee of MPs.

The 2015 initiative to build 200,000 homes and sell them at a 20% discount was formally scrapped this year without a single home being built. But £173m was spent buying land, a damning report by the Commons public accounts committee said. It is now on course to deliver only 6,600 homes and is being replaced by a new scheme."

    2. Anti-Corruption Champion’s foreword

The pandemic has made it a pretty difficult year for everyone but, with vaccines arriving, World Anti-Corruption Day has a slightly more hopeful lens to review what’s been happening recently, as well as to look ahead at some better prospects on the horizon too.

As challenging as this year and the response to the coronavirus has been it has also been a salient reminder of how important it is that we maintain our strong standards and protections in public procurement; publishing contract award details quickly and within stated deadlines, ensuring that proper audit trails are maintained and that proper due diligence and quality control checks are undertaken.

John Penrose MP The Prime Minister’s Anti-Corruption Champion & devoted husband to Dildo Hardon - so no conflict of interest there then

      https://www.nao.org.uk/report/government-procurement-during-the-covid-19-pandemic/

"Although we found sufficient documentation for a number of procurements in our sample, we also found specific examples where there is insufficient documentation on key decisions, or how risks such as perceived or actual conflicts of interest have been identified or managed. In addition, a number of contracts were awarded retrospectively, or have not been published in a timely manner."

      Delete
    3. Penrose goes on to say "Leaving the EU provides us with the opportunity for bold and radical reform of the public procurement framework."

More pertinent is this, which will no doubt be given no consideration by Johnson & cronies:

"The independent Committee on Standards in Public Life announced in September that it will be carrying out a review of the institutions, processes and structures in place to support high standards of conduct. The review will look at best practice and identify any themes and gaps in the way the Seven Principles of Public Life are promoted and maintained.

This month, the Law Commission reported on its review into the common law offence of misconduct in public office, recommending it be replaced by an offence of corruption in public office and an offence of breach of duty in public office. The government will issue a response in due course."

The shocking lack of integrity on display by the Tories over the last ten years has been breathtaking, but they are still in power - something the UK electorate must take the blame for. But in many ways I think people generally find it helpful to have The Clown Prince & others in power as it gives carte blanche permission to behave in similarly disgraceful ways, e.g. bullying, lying, greedy, selfish, etc etc etc.

However, Johnson appeared confused over the protests that Dhesi was referring to and responded: “Our view is that of course we have serious concerns about what is happening between India and Pakistan but these are pre-eminently matters for those two governments to settle.”

This is our PRIME minister - no doubt he was too busy daydreaming of rogering Ursula over the dinner table in Brussels.

  9. Not Probation topic Alert:

I've been watching a fascinating online lecture by a clinical specialist talking about covid-19. Much was over my head but the takeaways for me were:

    * there are at least 3 days pre-symptoms when people are highly contagious & shedding virus in an airborne form; this is why masks are so important for EVERYONE in any shared spaces as they reduce the unintentional spread of the virus by pre-symptomatic patients. It does NOT stop the spread but it makes a significant reduction to airborne contamination.

    * many people get symptoms but find they ease/disappear within a week / 7 days of first appearing

    * if the symptoms persist past the 7th day of first noticing symptoms, then its likely a severe condition will rapidly develop

    * by day 10 the patient should ideally be in a hospital receiving treatment as the body will likely be reacting strongly, the lungs will begin to struggle due to inflammation & the virus will progress to other organs

    * a successful vaccination is likely to provide between 12 & 36 months' protection; 'successful' means that the patient has not had an adverse reaction & they have received the specified dose/s

    * covid-19 is now regarded by most of the medical world as having embedded itself into the human population so, like influenza, its here to stay

    * the more we invest in protecting ourselves and others up-front, i.e. get vaccinated plus continue with masks, social space & good hygiene for the next 12/18 months, the greater chance there is of the longer term infection being manageable - like influenza is now.

    * they also estimated that trying for herd immunity without 90% of the UK population being vaccinated would mean having to 'accept' a death toll of between 1.5m & 2m.

    * the UK death toll is currently (officially) about 63,000

"BDO, one of the UK’s leading accountancy firms, is refusing to pay back £4.5m in furlough money it received from taxpayers despite paying its 264 partners an average of £518,000 each. In total the company paid its partners £137m.

Paul Eagland, the firm’s managing partner, said there had been a “moral debate” at the firm about whether or not to pay the money back, but that the firm believed it had a greater responsibility “to invest in jobs.”

Eagland said the furlough money BDO received early on in the pandemic had helped the company save 700 people from possible redundancy. He said BDO partners had also taken a hit, as their pay had fallen from an average of £602,000 they collected a year earlier."

      From their own website:

"Public Sector - The reduction in central government funding, the changing regulatory environment, growing requirements to integrate public services and opportunities to collaborate with private sector providers are only some of the challenges our public sector clients face. "Boris Johnson: no-deal Brexit now a 'strong possibility'

PM says he cannot accept UK being ‘locked in EU’s orbit’"

2013 - "I'm in favour of the single market. I want us to be able to trade freely with our European friends and partners."

2013 - "Staying in the Single Market is essential and deliverable"

Johnson called for a referendum on staying in a reformed EU:

2012 - "We could construct a relationship with the EU that more closely resembled that of Norway or Switzerland - except that we would be inside the single market council, and able to shape legislation"

2003 - "I'm a fan... if we did not have one [the EU] we would have to invent it"
