Ambition or Principle?

Before we all get back to probation stuff and domestic politics, I feel compelled to return momentarily to US politics, seen mostly through the lens of CNN.

I think it's pretty important because we've all been led to believe that the US provides 'leadership' for the free world. And that would ordinarily be the case, Trump having proved the exception to that unwritten rule over the last four years. In the middle of a global pandemic, the relief all reasonably-minded people felt upon hearing that a grown-up would soon be occupying the White House was positively palpable from where I was sitting. But it's not that straight forward is it?

The reality is that the present dangerous and emotionally retarded sociopath that still holds office until January 20th will continue to wreak as much damage as possible and in the process test the Constitution as never before, but hopefully not to breaking point. It also forces all Republican politicians to make a moral judgement call, never an easy position for many politicians nowadays, but especially for GOP 2024 contenders desperate not to upset 74 million Trump supporters. It's Daddy or chips? Ambition or principle? Republican Mitt Romney put it rather succinctly at the weekend:-

Sunday, January 3, 2021
SALT LAKE CITY– U.S. Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) released the following statement in response to an announcement that several Republican senators plan to oppose certification of the presidential election results:

“The egregious ploy to reject electors may enhance the political ambition of some, but dangerously threatens our Democratic Republic. The congressional power to reject electors is reserved for the most extreme and unusual circumstances. These are far from it. More Americans participated in this election than ever before, and they made their choice. President Trump’s lawyers made their case before scores of courts; in every instance, they failed. The Justice Department found no evidence of irregularity sufficient to overturn the election. The Presidential Voter Fraud Commission disbanded without finding such evidence.

“My fellow Senator Ted Cruz and the co-signers of his statement argue that rejection of electors or an election audit directed by Congress would restore trust in the election. Nonsense. This argument ignores the widely perceived reality that Congress is an overwhelmingly partisan body; the American people wisely place greater trust in the federal courts where judges serve for life. Members of Congress who would substitute their own partisan judgement for that of the courts do not enhance public trust, they imperil it.

“Were Congress to actually reject state electors, partisans would inevitably demand the same any time their candidate had lost. Congress, not voters in the respective states, would choose our presidents.

“Adding to this ill-conceived endeavor by some in Congress is the President’s call for his supporters to come to the Capitol on the day when this matter is to be debated and decided. This has the predictable potential to lead to disruption, and worse.

“I could never have imagined seeing these things in the greatest democracy in the world. Has ambition so eclipsed principle?”

And that was before the Washington Post got hold of a recorded hour-long delusional phone call call Trump made to the Georgia election chief effectively demanding he 'find' 11,780 more votes. He has already called the Senate run-off election on Tuesday 'illegal' and therefore likely to ensure Democratic control of the Senate. Will 11 Republican Senators really stand up on Wednesday and attempt to question Joe Biden's election for personal political gain and thereby help to further undermine the democratic process?

Just when you might think things can't get much worse, what on earth do you think 10 former Defence Secretaries from both parties know to warrant their joint letter asserting that the Military have sworn an oath of allegiance to the Constitution and not to any individual? Could the future block-buster film on the lines of 'Death of Stalin' end with tanks on the White House lawn and which way will they be facing?

There's still 16 days to go.

  1. There might be 16 days until Trump is carried off the premises, but there's still tomorrow:

    1. Whilst I dislike Trump and am glad Biden won, I hope the Republicans keep hold of the senate. They're much more pro-UK than the Democrats.

    2. Dirty Diaper News:

      * "Something how Dr. Fauci is revered by the LameStream Media as such a great professional, having done, they say, such an incredible job, yet he works for me and the Trump Administration, and I am in no way given any credit for my work. Gee, could this just be more Fake News?"

      * "The “Surrender Caucus” within the Republican Party will go down in infamy as weak and ineffective “guardians” of our Nation, who were willing to accept the certification of fraudulent presidential numbers!"

      * "Republicans have pluses & minuses, but one thing is sure, THEY NEVER FORGET!"

I don't particularly want the UK's mythical "special relationship" to be with nasty Donny's Mob - which will be the case if the GOP hold the Senate. Too many are terrified of Donny, who has the unpleasant combination of the filthy rich & a heavily armed, mindless militia at his beck & call.

    4. At a Georgia GOP rally the night before a closely contested senate runoff election, Donald Trump continued to recite debunked claims about election fraud and claim that he should have won the state of Georgia, and the 2020 presidential election overall. While the rally was meant to convince Georgia Republicans to go to the polls to elect Republican senators, Trump continued to cast doubt on the legitimacy of November’s election results and on the trustworthiness of Georgia’s current election officials.

Trump also used the Georgia rally to rail against anyone who had refused to endorse conspiracy theories about his supposed election victory, from the US supreme court to Georgia’s Republican secretary of state and governor. He pressured vice-president Mike Pence to use his ceremonial role later this week to contest the results of the election, and invited Marjorie Taylor Greene, the first QAnon conspiracy theorist elected to congress, on stage with him.

  2. 23 Dec 2020 - Frank wrote "* Deaths with COVID-19 on the death certificate at 11 Dec 2020 = 79,349. But that's data from two weeks ago.

So the summer prediction of 80,000 UK deaths by Xmas wasn't an hysterical doom-ridden unrealistic fantasy."

    Today we read:

Deaths with COVID-19 on the death certificate as at Friday, 18 December 2020 = 82,624

Frank hasn't been too far off the mark with much.

Pity he isn't posting any more. I miss your posts, Frank. It was a refreshing reality check to counter the false promises & inaction of the UK government.

No doubt Frank would point to the almost-60,000 new cases in the past 24 hours and highlight the fact that we're still several days away from the peak of the post-Xmas relaxation, irrespective of the impact of the new variant/s.

In the spirit of Frank, it is interesting to see historical data on the government pages shows massively different figures for UK daily cases reported:

    29-12-2020 80,664
    30-12-2020 65,571

Perhaps these were the true figures?

    1. Aha!! Notice how the bloated clown casually introduced the mysterious 80,664 new cases figure into tonight's 8pm lecture by way of justifying the new lockdown? But hang on, 29 December was a week ago.

It was, literally, *last year's news*.

  3. President Donald Trump has claimed that the numbers of coronavirus cases and deaths have been “exaggerated” in the United States, as the country saw record daily infections and its death toll surpassed 350,000.

“The number of cases and deaths of the China Virus is far exaggerated in the United States because of [the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention]’s ridiculous method of determination compared to other countries, many of whom report, purposely, very inaccurately and low,” Trump tweeted, calling it “fake news.”

  4. Clown Prince: “There is no doubt that in fighting the old variant of the virus, our collective efforts were working and would have continued to work”

Only partially true. Yes, the restriction periods *were* having an impact - but the post-lockdown self-indulgences were simply re-seeding the virus, e.g. eat-out-to-spread-the-virus, go on holiday, school & university madness, Xmas relaxation of restrictions.

As ever, the irritating, incompetent clown keeps on undermining any accidental success by getting carried away, believing his own bollox and handing out the sweets.

    "Mr Trump’s wrath.

“The ‘Surrender Caucus’ within the Republican party will go down in infamy as weak and ineffective ‘guardians’ of our Nation, who were willing to accept the certification of fraudulent presidential numbers!” Mr Trump wrote.

Earlier in the day, Mr Trump singled out Tom Cotton — typically a reliable ally of the president on Capitol Hill — for criticism after the senator from Arkansas said he would not join other Republican objectors to Mr Biden’s win.

“@SenTomCotton Republicans have pluses & minuses, but one thing is sure, THEY NEVER FORGET!”, the president wrote."
